Planning Guide

Private LTE/5G, Wi-Fi, or both? Start with the workflow.

A practical set of questions for choosing connectivity around applications, devices and operating conditions.

The device connects during the demonstration. The operating route, application behavior and support boundaries still need to be tested. Start by defining the workflow—not by assuming the radio determines the result.

Illustrative opening—not a customer case study.

A network decision becomes more useful when it starts with the work that must happen. Before selecting a technology, identify the devices, applications, locations and responsibilities involved.

Define the application

Describe what users or equipment need to do. Record where the workflow runs, what it depends on and what constitutes acceptable performance. Do not substitute a general speed target for an application requirement.

Inventory the devices

List the approved devices, interfaces and gateways. Compatibility must be checked rather than assumed. Include the people responsible for equipment and application support in the evaluation.

Understand the operating environment

Document indoor and outdoor areas, movement routes, power, installation access and expected site changes. Use these requirements to scope the assessment and validation work.

Compare complete approaches

Ask what can be retained, improved or combined. The decision may involve wireless, wired access, external connectivity and local infrastructure. Evaluate the complete design and operating obligations—not only the radio.

Define acceptance before deployment

Agree on relevant device, route, application and recovery tests. Document who approves the result and what happens if a test fails.

Make support part of the decision

Identify responsibility for connectivity, equipment, applications, security policy and changes. A design is not operationally complete until those boundaries are understood.

The appropriate next step is a scoped assessment—not an assumption that one technology should replace everything.
